- Max Beckmann uses clever hatches to give this self-portrait a sense of immediacy. - Self-portraits are a recurring theme in the artist's work and occupy a prominent place in his oeuvre. - The portfolio Tag und Traum (Day and Dream) is one of Beckmann's last graphic works.
