Esteban Vicente (1903-2001) Evening, from the Alison Series, 1976 Oil on canvas 48 x 72 inches (121.9 x 182.9 cm) Signed, titled, dated, and inscribed on the reverse: Alison Series Esteban Vicente / oil on canvas 1976 / 48 x 72 / "Evening" PROVENANCE: Fischbach Gallery, New York; Gruenebaum Gallery, New York; Dr. and Mrs. Mortimer Rosen, Shaker Heights, Ohio; Estate of Lynn Rosen, Rochester, New York. NOTE: This painting is included in the Esteban Vicente online catalogue raisonné, https://www.estebanvicente.com/artwork/CR.P76-05. Painted in 1976, Evening belongs to Esteban Vicente's Alison Series, named for his stepdaughter Alison Peters. The series gives a personal context to his longstanding exploration of color and light. A related painting from the same year, Alison Series: One November Day, is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In Evening, an orange rectangle glows near the lower center of a broad field of gray, blue and green. A smaller turquoise form floats above and to the right, while a dark horizontal band stretches across the left side. Their softened edges allow the colors to merge gradually with the surrounding paint. The orange provides a warm point of focus within the cooler atmosphere, suggesting the last traces of light at the end of the day. A member of the first generation of Abstract Expressionists, Vicente developed an approach grounded in close attention to relationships between color, light and form. His observations of nature remained important even as his paintings became abstract. Here, the wide format and subdued palette evoke a landscape at dusk without describing a particular place. Presents well. Unlined. Minor edgewear. A few faint scattered linear abrasions, most noticeable under raking light. A few scattered brown surface accretions. UV examined: no apparent inpaint. A few surface accretions flouresce under UV, particularly in lower right corner. Tape along tacking edges. Unframed.
