Olson of Wheaton College examined images of this work and proposed an attribution to Francesco Sabatelli, rather than his father, Luigi (1772-1850). In a letter dated November 10, 1997, she remarked that the reworked contours of the hand, arm, and face are certainly characteristic of Luigi's draftsmanship, as is the specific type of cross-hatching, but stressed that Francesco worked in a very similar style to his father, albeit on a smaller scale. After conducting additional research on the drawing, Professor Olson concluded, in a letter of July 8, 1998, that the influence of Luigi is clear, but the looser penmanship visible in this example more closely resembles that of Francesco.
