The present work is based on Ludovico Carracci's engraving of the same subject from circa 1608 (B. Bohn, Ludovico Carracci and the Art of Drawing, Oostkamp, Belgium, 2004, p. 381, no. 232). This engraving was the most popular of Carracci's prints, and is known in four states and nine printed copies, some in the reverse (fig. 1). Presents very well. Some minor abrasions and accretions near edges. Copper sheet is adhered to mount, preventing inspection of the reverse. Framed under glass. Under UV: brushy retouching at edges. Two circular areas of brushy retouching in lower left and right corners. Scattered, finely applied dots and dashes of retouching to the sky and background.
